Ubuntu and Wetiko
Following are excerpts from a 10/12/2013 article by travellerev entitled: "Ubuntu Versus Wetiko Or Why John Key Going To Mandela’s Funeral Is So Very, Very Wrong And Yet So Very Right Too."
"What struck me is how... all these world “leaders” who we all know are doing exactly the opposite of what Mandela stood for, fell over backwards to hail Mandela... and thus hijacked the very goal of his presence here on this planet for their own purposes.
"... look at the philosophy from which Mandela came, the concept of Ubuntu [as compared to] the concept of Wetiko ...
"Ubuntu... means that we are all part of the same spiritual body. We are not individuals so much as individual expressions of the same universe and to acknowledge one another as being part of the same human family and energy we become human in the fullest sense of the word. Not just that, we become part of the expression of that same universe as it manifests itself on this planet. (my interpretation)
"It means for example that if a stranger passes a village that person does not have to ask for food or a place to sleep as that is understood to be the need of one’s self and thus of the other and to deny the other is to deny yourself. It is, I feel, similar to the Buddhist concept of oneness and that of many of the philosophies of what we call first nation peoples. To be part of the human race means to be part of the fabric of life and the universe. The damage we do to others we do to ourselves and in doing so we damage the planet and life itself...
"Wetiko, described by Paul Levi with the Western term of malignant egophrenia, is the name given by many tribes of the North American continent to what they see as an inner disease of the spirit, soul and psyche that explicates itself through the canvas of the outside world. It acts as a virus in that it can spread to other individuals when they get in touch with an infected individual. It can grow and infect entire groups... as the very opposite of what the concept of Ubuntu... [wetiko] tries to convince the sufferer that only his/her own personal gain is important and that what happens to others around him will not affect him and are therefore not his responsibility.
"In other words the Wetiko infection separates the “individual” from the spiritual nourishment of being part of the human species and also of the sensation of being part of and at the same time the whole of the universe. This means that the sufferer is no longer part of life and of this planet and this universe. Maybe even the whole concept of peace in the afterlife and the concept of paradise is a manifestation of the sickness of Wetiko and the craving of its victims to get back to the concept of Ubuntu and connectedness.

I see 7 billion people living on planet Earth.
I see 30,0000 children dying from starvation every day.
I see half naked supermodels exploiting themselves and selling their souls.
I see 1 million pounds of food thrown away every day.
I see decades of inhumane and desensitizing TV shows and movies.
I see cold blooded murder for money, property and power.
I see 100,000 years of toxic depleted uranium.
I see the Earth being sucked dry of her lifeblood, oil.
I see 4 billion humans who live in a land of illusion.
I see corporate crime being overlooked merely for individual monetary profit.
I see a military industrial complex creating world wide genocide.
I see 4 billion pounds of toxic industrial pollution every year.

I see man made diseases being spread via pharmaceuticals.
I see disharmony, confusion, death and deceit.
I see 2 billion perfectly functioning cell phones thrown away every year.
I see a private global banking cartel printing fiat currencies to control the masses.
I see 50% of US tax dollars being spent on military use.
I see private corporations that own and run 51% of everything on Earth.
I see governments polishing the shoes of these private corporations.
I see the massive corporate exploitation and waste of natural resources.
I see corporate planned and perceived obsolescence.
I see a fluoride contaminated fresh water supply that's rapidly diminishing.
I see corporate advertising lying to the world every day.
I see the oceans and seas being raped of life merely to provide for more unnecessary consumption and profit.
I see that 80% of the Earth's original forests are now gone.
I see people living in a system that is based merely on material consumption.... Not parenting, not knowledge... and not freedom.
I see 100,000 synthetic toxic chemicals mixed with organic compounds to create poison food, merchandise and products.
I see little children with their fingers and hands cut off for refusing to forcefully mine diamonds.
I see 1% of the population screwing over the other 99% solely for temporary personal gain.
I see a world economic social system that has no other choice but to be abandoned.

One of my personal favourite Luke kelly songs, performed with the Dubliners. Enjoy! The songs history derides those members of the Parliament of Scotland who signed the Act of Union with England in 1707, comparing their treachery, to the country with the tradition of martial valor and resistance commonly associated with such historic figures as Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. It has continued to be associated with Scottish nationalism and also been referenced in other situations where politicians' actions have gone against popular opinion.

- Written by Robert Burns as a protest against the Act of Union, 1707, which joined the parliaments of England and Scotland. Although initially againstthe Act, the Scottish parliament soon agreed when offered a large pension each by the English government. The people had no say, and thus were 'bought and sold for English gold'. They are still paying the price.
